In our classes this week we used our time to absolutely finalize our calligram projects. I fee like I am getting much more comfortable with using Adobe Illustrator than I was before. I think this was the week that everything finally clicked in my head and my entire project became easier.
I began using the mesh tool to warp my words in the exact way that I wanted them to be to perfect and make sure that nothing is jumping out at the viewer in a strange way. I was getting frustrated with how repetitive each step is, as it felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again. However, it was extremely rewarding to see the results at the end and see how everything turned out.
I spent a lot of my time out of class trying to select what parts of my future letter to myself that I wanted to include in my calligram, while also trying to decide what parts of my face that I wanted each part of my letter to be on, as I think the location of the words can lead to a lot of meaning in my calligram. I wanted to place the part of my letter where I am talking about my future wishes and desires on my forehead, as that is what people will notice the most and it could also represent my inner thoughts. It is likely to be the first place that people will look at when they look at my face. On my eyebrows I talked about my worries for my future, specifically what career path I would like to go down. I placed that there as I feel like a lot of the time your eyebrows represent worry as they are very expressive of emotion and often furrow when you are worried or stressed about something. On my cheeks, I talked about how as of right now I am torn between two cities, London and Miami. I chose my cheeks because there are two of them just like my two different cities that I cannot decide between. They are also very noticeable and will stand out to the viewer. I also talked about how I would like to keep in touch with my two best friends on my cheek. Again, I chose this location because there are two of them. Lastly, on the sides of my cheeks near my chin I talked about how I am doing currently, such as my major being Advertising and Public Relations. I chose this location as it is less visible as it is less relevant to know, as if I am the one reading back my letter I would already know all of this. It appears to be almost hidden.
Finally, after a long few weeks we finally submitted our calligram in both the black and white and the color version. I feel extremely accomplished and am excited to see what our next project will be.
