Weekly Blog Post 3 – 02/20

This past week in class we have all begun to dive deeper into creating our very own calligram. I am starting to understand this assignment more as it did seem quite daunting at first, but I feel like in no time it will begin to make much more sense.

We spent last Thursdays class working with our headshots. I was having some trouble finding nice pictures of me that were good quality, but I ultimately decided on using my graduation photos. The only issue I encountered with this was that I did not have three, only two. However, I know which one would be good to use anyways. We uploaded our headshots onto Adobe Illustrator and began to experiment with the software on it. We traced the outlines of our eyes, eyebrows, and noses with the pen tool.

We were then given tracing paper to trace different sketches of our face with. I drew mine too small at first, so I decided last night to create a new, bigger, one of my face. We had to outline the parts of our face where we were going to put the writing on, in this case this would be the letter that we wrote last night to our future selves. I highlighted my cheek and forehead area in particular.

I have been quite confused in the last weeks with the switch from drop box to one drive and then back to drop box. I completely understand why we need to switch and the whole complication with it, it's just that my computer can not really keep up. When I try and access folders in the drop box now my computer says the file does not exist, despite the many emails with links and invitations that I received. Also, when I press on the links in my email, it says my school account does not work, as well has my personal account. At this moment in time, I am only in the exercise 4 and 7 folders and that is it.

Despite those issues, yesterday's class was quite interesting as we got to see everyone's different unique takes on their sketches of their faces. We also did an exercise on Adobe Illustrator which introduced me to even more interesting things that Adobe Illustrator allows us to do that I would have never known about. It was using the mesh tool as well as the envelope, where we had to but the words onto the car from the movie National Lampoons Vacation. We can stretch the words in any direction we would like as elongate it.

Overall, I am slowly but surely beginning to feel more comfortable with Adobe Illustrator as a whole. I am excited to continue building on my calligram. I am not too sure what the next step is but I am intrigued to see what my final product would look like when its finally done. I also hope that soon I will have access to the folders that I don’t and that my computer will finally be able to support Adobe Illustrator, so I do not have to continue to go back and forth from the computer lab when we have an out of class assignment.
